I don’t really get why she’s always so down on herself, you know, Lyle? She’s a great duelist, she’s intelligent and she can do anything she puts her mind to. It’s just that she doesn’t ever think she can. I mean, I used to be the same way, but once I got older, that…”

Adam’s voice trailed off. Or rather, Lyle’s attention diverted as he tuned Adam out once again. It was really all the Irish-born student ever heard from his supposed ‘best friend’. And while normally he wouldn’t tune out anything that was said around him, he always made an exception for these kinds of ‘conversations’, because he’d gotten so good at ignoring what was said about the object of Adam’s obvious affection and even better at picking up keywords that would be said that weren’t usually used when speaking of Candriss.

But then he heard ‘tournament’ and Lyle suddenly started listening again.

“… tournament, and I hope she takes part in it too. Even if she doesn’t make it to the top 25 of the Academy, it might do wonders for her self-confidence.”

Why haven’t you just asked her out?” Of course, Lyle asked that same question many times before, and it was always the same answer.

I can read girls, Lyle. She doesn’t like guys like me.” He paused and looked Lyle up and down – this was a variant from the norm. “I think she’s into guys like you.” He lifted his arm and started on a melodramatic rant on how life was just so unfair and that it never pays to be the ‘good guy’. Lyle tried to ignore this as well, but it didn’t work because suddenly, there was a finger shoved in his face.

And you! What’s so bloody great about you, anyway? You’re my best friend and all, but how is it that you have the women just swooning over you when you glare at them? How much sense does that even make, really?”

Lyle rolled his eyes as he crossed his arms over his chest, his eyes on a group of girls passing by. The three girls all made eye contact with him, and he narrowed his eyes, only to see the three of them skip a beat in their steps, then quickly duck their heads low to hide their flushed faces before taking off, chattering away about the dark-haired male. “See what I mean, Lyle? Girls love you,” Adam sputtered, and when Lyle looked back at him, he couldn’t help but chuckle.

I’m going to get ready for this tournament,” he said as he turned away from Adam. “See you in the top 25, if you’re lucky enough.”

Lyle! I’m just as good as you!”

Another chuckle. “Sure you are,” he called over his shoulder as he walked back to his dorm.
